Of course I know the lyric is "wasting away again in Margaritaville," which many believe to be in reference to Key West. I am one of those believers. However, what many folks don't know is that Jimmy was inspired to write the classic song by a summer cocktail he had a few too many of in Austin, TX! Yep, it was at Lung's Cocina del Sur. Sadly, this former famous institution of confusing Asian meets Tex-Mex style cuisine is no longer around. If you wander down to Anderson Lane now, you'll find a Star of India. Maybe that could be a future hit song for Jimmy!
So despite being disappointed in not being able to hit up the original spot for an original "margarita," I had no option but to ask myself--What Would Jimmy Buffett Do?
Beyond a good summer-ish cocktail at the Congress Hotel bar, I think there's plenty of activities that Jimmy would approve of. I mean Austin doesn't just have some Jimmy significance but Johnny Cash was quite an influence as well. One of my favorite moments was a visit to the Mean Eyed Cat bar which if you recognize the name, it's no surprise that this saloon is all things Cash!
And I can't imagine that Mr. Dazed and Confused, and the pride of Austin, Matthew McConaughey isn't a Parrothead. If he's not, we need to grandfather him in!
There's plenty to keep you feeling weird in Austin. The food, the music, the history, and the art scenes made it feel like a true Margaritaville to me and I can't wait to go back. I say let your Phlock Flag fly Austin!
