Escape to Margaritaville: Opening Preview Night in La Jolla

Escape to Margaritaville: Opening Preview Night in La Jolla

Good music? Check! It was like his songs were written with a musical in mind all along. Good story? Check! I found myself teary-eyed at moments seeing Jimmy's lyrics come to life this way. Good humor and just enough irreverence? Check! Good cast? No, they were more than good! They are great! The singing, the dancing, the comedic delivery was all there!

For decades, Key West has been home to lost souls. Those seeking to get away from it all, whether it be for a weekend or a lifetime. Many icons have called Key West home. A place to find yourself while not being yourself at all. From former Presidents like Harry Truman, to my other hero Ernest Hemingway, and of course our dearest Jimmy Buffett!

He went, so of course I went too. In fact, I've been going every year in September for the last few years. I'm totally hooked on Jimmy's shows in Paris. So much so that I almost don't want to tell you how amazing it is, because those small venue tickets at La Cigale are not easy to come by.

Well, not exactly that Southern Island referred in one of Jimmy's favorite covers from Crosby, Stills, and Nash. My version for this post is more like Catalina Island. Yep, the one with that F***ing Wine Mixer! But ya know what, the lyrics to Southern Cross still apply.

Wasting Away Again In...Austin!

Wasting Away Again In...Austin!

Of course I know the lyric is "wasted away again in Margaritaville," which many believe to refer to Key West. I am one of those believers. However, what many folks don't know is that Jimmy was inspired to write the classic song by a summer cocktail he had a few of in Austin, TX!

And so it begins in Paradise...Texas

And so it begins in Paradise...Texas

Ironically, Jorge wasn't all that familiar with Jimmy Buffett when I sat down with him, but he's got a whole lot of Margaritaville in his heart. Divorced and looking for a place to escape, Jorge drove out to Paradise, saw a for sale sign on an old Mexican restaurant, bought it, and made it a party paradise of his own.
